Competition is the part of capitalism that works. It pushes prices down and quality up, and it is exactly what disappears when a handful of platforms own the software every business depends on. When the tools are rented, the terms can change at any time, and the business renting them has no say in it.
The gatekeeping was never technical. The hardware got cheap, the software got good, and the price stayed high anyway. The era of megacorporations charging small and mid-sized businesses monthly for tools they could simply own is ending — and we would like to help end it.
